Linux: (pre)setting the display brightness

UNFINISHED. Work in progress... Every time the computer reboots, the brightness settings are reset. I wanted to have different default brightness when I turn on the computer, because I was a bit tired of the same few keypresses every time I boot it up. Depending on your system, the path where to fi...

Linux unzip: "need PK compat. v5.1 (can do v4.6)"

[PROBLEM] I tried to unpack a .zip file using XFCE's file roller (aka "Archive Manager"), but got the error message: "An error occurred while extracting files" So I tried it in the shell. There I got a slightly more informative error message: "need PK compat. v5.1 (can do v...

It works! :)

I've wired up a prototype setting and: It works! :D Hooray! Although: I've substituted the diodes with a diode-rectifier. I didn't have the proper diodes at hand, and couldn't wait to try it out. Had an old rectifier laying around. Connecting it this way to achieve the same as the above circuit: rec...

Buffer car radio with 9V block battery

I want to use an old car radio for music on our toilet :) It shall turn on/off with the light switch. Now the problem is, that the car radio requires some power permanently to remember where it left of (or its radio stations). According to this this thread from 2013 in boot-forum (German) , someone ...

Firefox weird: "Customize" menu randomly disabled

Strange thing:
I've used the "Customize..." feature to adjust the position of icons in Firefox. I love it!

But every now and then, that menu item is disabled (grayed out). Why?

Haven't found an answer to this yet.

Corn tortillas

  • 1,5 cups flour
  • 1,5 cups corn meal (=ground polenta)
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp salt
Quite good!
I've made it with spelt flour (instead of wheat) 1:1, but I'm going to try more corn flour next time. Something like 2:1 :D

GDPR & Invoices

The immediate effect of GDPR that I realize is, that I still receive spam by companies I'm customer of - but not the monthly invoices I would need for accounting. :? I'm not bitching about the GDPR, but the fact that the actual "evil-doers" it was written for (still) just ignore it - or sn...

Vim: Linebreak at 80 characters

If you want to quickly format a plain text into a certain-character-width, here's how to do it in Vim : Set the text-width to 80 characters: :set tw=80 Then the following options are at your service: gq{motion} % format the line that {motion} moves over {Visual}gq % format the visually selected area...

[PROBLEM] Fresh install of Xubuntu Xenial (16.04.3 LTS), but with an external harddisk that was previously formatted, used - and is still filled with data - I get the following error, whenever I try to simply hit the "delete" button (=move a file to the trash/wastebasket): Unable to find ...

CUPS: network printer not responding

[PROBLEM] Running an RPi as printer server for years now, but today it suddenly (*) decided not to receive any documents anymore  (*) Tried to print 3 different PDFs. 2 came out - and after that: the local print-queue (on client) piled up, while the CUPS server queue stayed empty. Strange......

Make sure "LC_ALL" is also set.

It seems that "$LC_ALL" is not set by default on Xubuntu Xenial (16.04.3 LTS)... :? There's probably a reason, but I don't know it (yet). If the above steps for regenerating the locales don't fix the issue on your setup, add the following line to "/etc/environment": LC_ALL="...
