Thunderbird: mail server sent an incorrect greeting...

Post by ^rooker »

[PROBLEM]
Since a few weeks, I'm getting sporadic errors while trying to send mail with Thunderbird v2.0.0.22 (20090608) on Ubuntu Hardy.

I can send mails, but only sometimes. 4 out of 5 times, I get a strange error message like this:
An error occured sending mail: The mail server sent an incorrect greeting: xxx.xxx.xxx yyy ... temporary failure.
(I've censored parts: xxx.xxx.xxx is a DNS name, and yyy some other provider-specific value)

It seems, that others are also having problems like that:

No SSL, no authentication, plain vanilla on port 25. hmpf.
Tech-support hotline said it's probably a timeout problem with my client.

Will finish this thread when I have found a solution.
Jumping out of an airplane is not a basic instinct. Neither is breathing underwater. But put the two together and you're traveling through space!
