[Vista/V64U] USB Mice stop working

Post by gilthanaz »

[Problem]
After a reboot, no USB mouse is recognized correctly anymore. Windows says the driver installation for "USB Browser Mouse" failed. Reinstalling the manufacturers mouse driver does not fix the issue.

[Solutions]
In the Device Manager, find the 'Unknown Device' that currently represents your mouse, and select 'reinstall driver'. Say that you want to choose the driver yourself and chose the driver 'HID compliant mouse' (or something like that) instead of the preselected 'USB Browser Mouse'. It worked for me after that.

If not, other options are: Upgrade to SP1 since some USB adressing issues have been fixed in the service pack. Also available, the option to use windows update as it might have an updated mouse driver. That was the case for me, but since windows update can not be controlled with keyboard only (WTF???) i had to fix it the above mentioned way.
