Debian7: Not enough information: "dev" argument is required.

Post by ^rooker »

[PROBLEM]
Adding an additional IP to a network interface on Debian 7.
Business as usual, but in this case I got the following error message when trying to "ifup" the alias:
Not enough information: "dev" argument is required.
Failed to bring up eth1:0.
[SOLUTION]
I had a comment next to an address line.
This doesn't work anymore. The comment had to be removed in order to work.

See Debian Bug #673043: "new ifupdown does not understand comments in interfaces, breaking existing setups" for details.
Jumping out of an airplane is not a basic instinct. Neither is breathing underwater. But put the two together and you're traveling through space!
