[PROBLEM]
On Ubuntu 6.06 server, I wanted to start midnight commander (mc) but all I got was a strange ASCII character in the upper right corner. nothing else.
It looked like a freeze, but in fact it just took incredibly long to start.
[SOLUTION]
MC was running into a timeout of a mounted samba share. That share simply was unreachable, causing all commands accessing it (mount, ls, etc...) to wait for a timeout.
I've fixed the problem with that share and MC was working properly again.

Jumping out of an airplane is not a basic instinct. Neither is breathing underwater. But put the two together and you're traveling through space!
